Lalita Saptami is an important festival in Hindu tradition, celebrated on the seventh day (Saptami) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) during the month of Bhadrapada or Ashwin, depending on regional calendars. The day is dedicated to Goddess Lalita, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, who is revered as a form of Shakti (divine feminine energy).
Lalita Saptami 2024 Date: September 10, Tuesday.
Significance:
Lalita Saptami is primarily observed by devotees of the Shakta sect, who believe in the worship of the divine feminine. Goddess Lalita is often associated with beauty, grace, and power. She is regarded as one of the ten Mahavidyas (great wisdom goddesses) and holds a significant place in tantric worship. The day is also linked to spiritual enlightenment and victory over ignorance and evil.
Observances:
Fasting: Devotees observe a day-long fast, offering prayers to Goddess Lalita. The fast is believed to purify the mind and body.
Rituals: Special pujas (prayer ceremonies) are performed in temples and homes, where idols or pictures of Goddess Lalita are worshipped with offerings of flowers, sweets, and fruits. Devotees chant the Lalita Sahasranama, a hymn consisting of 1,000 names of the goddess, which is believed to invoke her blessings.
Spiritual Practices: Many devotees meditate on this day, focusing on inner peace and spiritual growth.
Regional Celebrations:
In different parts of India, the festival has regional variations. For instance, in some regions, it is celebrated alongside Durga Puja or Navratri, emphasizing the worship of Shakti. It is more commonly observed in places where tantric practices are followed, such as in West Bengal, Odisha, and parts of South India.
Lalita Saptami is a day for seeking the goddess’s blessings for well-being, prosperity, and wisdom.
