Savitri Vrat is a significant observance for married Hindu women, especially in the states of Odisha, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Maharashtra. It is observed on the Amavasya (new moon day) of the Jyeshtha month according to the Hindu calendar, which usually falls in May or June. On this day, women fast and pray for the long life, well-being, and prosperity of their husbands.
Savitri Vrat 2025 Date: Monday, May 26.
Amavasya Tithi Begins – 12:11 PM on May 26, 2025.
Amavasya Tithi Ends – 08:31 AM on May 27, 2025.
The vrat is named after the legendary woman Savitri, whose devotion and determination are celebrated in Hindu mythology. According to the story from the Mahabharata, Savitri’s husband, Satyavan, was destined to die at a young age. When Yama, the god of death, came to take his soul, Savitri followed him and pleaded for her husband’s life. Her unwavering love and intelligence impressed Yama, who finally granted her a boon, restoring Satyavan’s life.
On Savitri Vrat, women wake up early, take a ritual bath, and dress in new or traditional clothes, often wearing bangles, vermillion, and other symbols of marriage. They observe a day-long fast, refraining from food and water in many cases. Prayers are offered to Savitri and to the banyan tree, which is symbolic of eternal life. Women walk around the tree, tie sacred threads, and listen to or read the story of Savitri and Satyavan. The rituals are believed to bring blessings and strengthen the marital bond.
This vrat is not just a spiritual practice but also a cultural tradition that highlights a woman’s love, strength, and commitment in marriage. It holds deep emotional and religious significance for those who observe it.
