Fasting on Sankashti Chaturthi is a significant practice observed by devotees of Lord Ganesha. This day, which falls on the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu lunar calendar, is dedicated to worshipping Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Devotees believe that observing a fast on this day brings them closer to divine blessings, helping them overcome difficulties and attain prosperity.
The fast typically lasts from sunrise until moonrise, when devotees offer special prayers and break their fast after sighting the moon. Sankashti Chaturthi is also marked by the recitation of Ganesha prayers and reading the story of Ganesha’s victory over challenges, which reinforces the faith of devotees in his protective powers.
Fasting on Sankashti Chaturthi is a devoted practice observed by many followers of Lord Ganesha. The fast begins at sunrise and continues until the moon is sighted in the evening. During this time, devotees abstain from consuming food, often sticking to a diet of fruits, milk, and water, though some may opt for a complete fast with no food or water.
Special prayers and rituals are performed in honor of Lord Ganesha, including the recitation of the Sankashti Vrat Katha, a story that highlights Ganesha’s ability to remove obstacles. The fast is broken after sighting the moon, which is considered auspicious.
At this point, devotees offer prasad, typically modaks (sweet dumplings) or other sweets, to Ganesha before consuming it themselves. The act of fasting is seen as a way to seek the blessings of Ganesha, hoping for the removal of personal and professional obstacles and the fulfillment of wishes.
