Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024 Date, Significance, Rituals

Posted on November 3, 2024

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. This day, one of the most significant festivals in Sikhism, is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) in the month of Kartik, according to the lunar calendar, which usually falls in October or November.
Guru Nanak Jayanti in 2024 falls on November 15, Friday.
Background and Significance
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in the village of Talwandi, now known as Nankana Sahib, in present-day Pakistan. He was a spiritual leader and social reformer who preached the message of “Ek Onkar,” meaning “One God.” Guru Nanak emphasized the importance of selfless service, equality, compassion, and devotion to God, and he rejected caste distinctions and other social hierarchies. His teachings are preserved in the sacred Sikh text, the Guru Granth Sahib.
How it is Celebrated
The celebration of Guru Nanak Jayanti usually begins with Akhand Path, a 48-hour non-stop reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, held at gurdwaras (Sikh temples). On the day of the festival, Sikhs participate in Nagar Kirtans, processions led by the holy book, which is placed on a decorated float. These processions are filled with music, singing, and martial arts displays, and are accompanied by Gatka, a traditional Sikh form of martial arts.
In addition to prayers and devotional singing, gurdwaras also organize langar, or community meals, where people from all backgrounds are invited to eat together. Langar reflects Guru Nanak’s message of equality and service to others.
Key Messages
Guru Nanak Jayanti is a time for Sikhs to reflect on the Guru’s teachings, which emphasize universal brotherhood, selflessness, and devotion. People are encouraged to engage in acts of kindness and community service, upholding the values of compassion, humility, and respect for all.
Guru Nanak Jayanti is not only celebrated by Sikhs but also by people of different faiths, who join in the festivities and honour the life and teachings of Guru Nanak, a revered figure in India and around the world.
