The Meaning Behind Raksha Bandhan

The term Raksha Bandhan translates to “the bond of protection.” On this day, sisters tie a decorative thread, known as a rakhi, around the wrist of their brothers. This simple yet symbolic act represents a sister’s love and prayers for her brother’s well-being, while the brother, in return, pledges to protect and support his sister throughout life.

Though traditionally celebrated between biological siblings, Raksha Bandhan has evolved over time. Today, it also signifies emotional bonds beyond blood relations, between cousins, friends, and even neighbours who share sibling-like affection.

The Rituals and Celebrations

Raksha Bandhan usually begins with a small puja or prayer ceremony. Sisters apply a tilak on their brother’s forehead, perform an aarti, and then tie the rakhi. In return, brothers give gifts or money as a token of appreciation and affection. The day is filled with laughter, shared meals, and nostalgic conversations that bring families closer.

Markets buzz with vibrant rakhis of various designs, from traditional threads to modern, designer ones, along with sweets, gift hampers, and greeting cards. In recent years, eco-friendly and handmade rakhis have also gained popularity, reflecting a growing sense of responsibility towards the environment.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Raksha Bandhan’s origins are rooted in history and mythology. One of the earliest references is found in the epic Mahabharata, where Draupadi tied a piece of cloth to Krishna’s wrist, and in return, he promised to protect her. Another tale tells of Rani Karnavati of Mewar sending a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun, seeking protection for her kingdom.

These stories highlight how the festival goes beyond mere rituals, carrying a deeper message of unity, respect, and mutual support.
