Spiritual Importance
The word “Mokshada” combines Moksha (liberation) and da (giver), indicating its significance as a day to attain liberation from the cycle of life and death. Observing this Ekadashi is believed to open the doors to Vaikuntha, the celestial abode of Lord Vishnu. It is also associated with offering peace to the souls of departed ancestors.
Rituals and Observances
Fasting: Devotees undertake a strict fast, refraining from grains, rice, and certain other foods. Some observe a nirjala vrat (without water), while others follow a phalahar vrat (fruit and milk-based fast).
Puja and Prayer: Worship of Lord Vishnu is central, with offerings of tulsi leaves, flowers, and fruits. Devotees chant Vishnu Sahasranama (the 1,000 names of Lord Vishnu) and other hymns dedicated to the deity.
Charity: Acts of kindness and donations to the needy, especially of food, clothes, and money, are considered an integral part of the observance.
Jagran: Staying awake through the night, singing bhajans and devotional songs, is common among devotees.
Ties to the Bhagavad Gita
Mokshada Ekadashi is also celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna delivered the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. This connection adds to its spiritual importance, making it a day for reflection on dharma and the pursuit of inner wisdom.
