Hartalika Teej is a significant Hindu festival celebrated primarily by women in India, particularly in the northern and central states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh. The festival typically falls during the monsoon season, on the third day of the bright half of the lunar month of Bhadrapada (August–September).
Hartalika Teej 2024 Date: Friday, September 6.
Tritiya Tithi Begins – 12:21 PM on Sep 05, 2024.
Tritiya Tithi Ends – 03:01 PM on Sep 06, 2024.
Significance
Hartalika Teej is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and her union with Lord Shiva. The word “Hartalika” is a combination of “Harat” (abduction) and “Aalika” (female friend), referring to the story where Parvati was taken away by her friend to avoid an unwanted marriage proposal. Goddess Parvati’s intense devotion and penance impressed Lord Shiva, who eventually agreed to marry her, symbolizing the triumph of love and devotion.
Rituals and Customs
Fasting: Women, especially married women, observe a day-long fast, often without even drinking water, praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands. Unmarried women fast in the hope of finding a suitable partner.
Worship: Women dress up in colourful saris, apply mehndi (henna), and adorn themselves with jewellery. They perform puja by making clay idols of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, offering fruits, flowers, and sweets.
Songs and Dance: Women gather in groups to sing traditional folk songs and perform dances, celebrating the bond of love and marital happiness.
Hartalika Teej is an occasion for women to seek marital bliss, good fortune, and the health and longevity of their spouses, while also expressing solidarity and joy in their community.
